Clean TeQ Water's ammonia removal technology can consistently and efficiently reach ammonia concentrations as low as less than 1ppm without using membrane treatment.
Ammonia can be present in water for a range of reasons, including bacterial processes for soil, aquaculture, decay of plants, animals and animal wastes, surface runoff of fertiliser, and through a range of industrial and mining processes. Excessive ammonia concentration in water can cause odour issues, impact the ability to reuse water, and can be toxic for aquatic life.
Traditional ammonia removal plants use bacteria to break down ammonia in waste waters, which are often not able to meet the strictest (<1 ppm) ammonia effluent concentrations required for disposal of water into sensitive environments or for reuse in some cases. This challenge is even greater during colder weather months when bacteria are less active. Filtration methods such as reverse osmosis can reach low ammonia concentrations, but produce a concentrated ammonia brine
Ammonia Removal Technologies
Our BIOCLENS® lenses contain encapsulated, living bacteria in a stable, porous PVA gel matrix. The bacteria are specifically selected for nitrification in fresh and seawater conditions, where ammonia is converted into nitrate and nitrite. The nitrate and nitrite can be denitrified to harmless nitrogen gas if required through further treatment. The high concentration of bacteria in the lens allows for intensified reactions, smaller site footprints, and effective water treatment in all climates.
